James A. Beck, CFP®, CAP®, is a Senior Vice-President with Hefren-Tillotson and takes great pride in assisting clients in the accumulation and preservation of their wealth. Jim joined Hefren-Tillotson in 1986 as a Financial Advisor and became a principal of the firm just three years later.
He served as Branch Manager and Compliance Officer of Hefren-Tillotson’s Butler office for well over a decade before stepping away from his managerial roles. Jim was one of the first in the firm to earn his CFP® certification and more recently he attained his designation as a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP®) from the American College of Financial Services. Jim is a graduate of Dickinson College (1979) where he earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Economics and Psychology.
In 1999, Lyric Schnur joined the firm as Jim’s financial assistant. Upon learning of Lyric’s desire to become an advisor and recognizing that there was a strong and mutual commitment to their client’s best interest, Jim asked Lyric to become his business partner. In 2003 Lyric accepted the invitation and they formed one of the longest lasting partnerships in the firm.
As the partnership continued to grow Lyric and Jim realized the need to once again expand their business. Having worked with Trevor (TJ) McCance when he served as the Director of Insurance at Hefren they realized that TJ would be a great addition to the team and they asked him to become a member of the Beck Schnur Group. In November of 2016 TJ formally joined the team. With the help of their assistants, Debbie Evans and Jessica Tate, Lyric, TJ and Jim continue to strive to serve a growing and diverse client base.
Having volunteered with a variety of non-profit organizations Jim is committed to philanthropy and takes particular pleasure in helping his charitably inclined clients discover their ability to make charitable gifts and finding creative ways to fulfill those desires. Jim lives in the Ligonier Valley and enjoys golf, shooting and fly-fishing.
James is a multi-year FIVE Star Wealth Manager Award winner presented by Five Star Professional.
