Willard J. Tillotson, Jr., is Chairman of the Board of Hefren-Tillotson, a privately-held Pittsburgh-based firm offering comprehensive financial planning and investment advisory services to individuals, foundations, trusts, and corporate retirement plans. Founded in 1948, Hefren-Tillotson has grown to be the largest and oldest investment advisory firm headquartered in Western Pennsylvania and a leader in the areas of comprehensive financial planning, investment management, and corporate services.
Through the majority of the firm's proud history, Mr. Tillotson has been at the helm, acting as Chief Executive Officer since 1962 and prudently advising clients since 1955. While his career is highlighted by numerous accomplishments, his greatest success was having the foresight to recognize that clients can best reach their long-term financial goals by coordinating their entire financial situation. Through his thoughtful insight into client needs and recognition of the importance of a written plan, he developed a comprehensive approach to advising clients called Masterplan. Unlike the methodology of the day, which centered around finding the latest hot stock, Mr. Tillotson's Masterplan approach led to an understanding of each client’s unique personal goals and a plan that integrated all aspects of their financial situation, including wills, insurance, investments, retirement benefits, and taxes. Decades later, the entire financial services industry awoke to the realization that a client's needs cannot be met by uncoordinated transactions, but only through comprehensive, coordinated, and personal ‘financial planning.’
Mr. Tillotson graduated from Allegheny College in 1952. He is a Trustee Emeritus of Allegheny College and has served as Chair of the Alumni Association and served on Allegheny's Board of Trustees, as Chairman of the Investment Committee and member of the Executive Committee.
Serving as Chairman of the Security Industry Association Local Firms Group, as well as acting as both a member and arbitrator for the NASD District Committee, Mr. Tillotson has been an active member in the securities industry. He is also a member of the Pittsburgh Stock and Bond Club and the International Association of Financial Planners.
Mr. Tillotson’s integrity, competence, and years of personal service have not gone unnoticed. He was recognized by industry peers in 1995 when he was elected to the “Broker Hall of Fame.” This honor distinguishes those individuals with exceptional professional competence, integrity and community service. In 2001, he was selected as a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and was named Man of the Year in Finance by Vectors/Pittsburgh. Under his leadership, Hefren-Tillotson has also received numerous awards including the “#1 Best Place to Work in PA” (2001), Pittsburgh's 100 Fastest Growing Companies (2001), and Family Business of the Year (2000).
In uncommon fashion, Mr. Tillotson's professional success has been matched by his community involvement and generosity. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the United Methodist Foundation and is a generous supporter of many Pittsburgh performing arts, such as the Civic Light Opera, the Pittsburgh Ballet, and the Pittsburgh Symphony. In addition to his years of service, Mr. Tillotson has also been formally recognized by Allegheny College for supporting the institution's education and development efforts. In 2007, he was presented with the Alumni Medal, Allegheny's most prestigious alumni award.
Mr. Tillotson and his wife, Carol, have three children and eight grandchildren and reside in Saxonburg, PA. His daughter and son Kimberly Tillotson Fleming and Craig A. Tillotson, President and Executive Vice President of Hefren-Tillotson, are building on the foundation of success, integrity, and family values established by their father.
